Ukraine says Starlink connection has returned to stable operating levels
Usagevpn.com – Ukraine says its access to Elon Musk’s Starlink network has stabilised again, easing concerns over communications that are vital to troops, drone teams and logistics personnel operating during Russia’s invasion.
Defence Minister Yevhenii Khmara said on Saturday that monitoring equipment had detected a recovery in Starlink and Starshield performance. The announcement follows days of heightened concern in Kyiv over limits affecting military use of the satellite internet service.
“Monitoring systems are recording a recovery in the speed of Starlink/Starshield. We are registering a speed of more than 400 km/h, the connection is stable,” Khmara said.
He said the improvement mattered directly to the country’s defence effort. Satellite connectivity can support communications in areas where conventional networks are damaged, unavailable or unreliable, while also assisting the coordination of supplies and unmanned systems.
“This result is above all important for our front, for our soldiers, for the operation of drones, for logistics and for communications,” Khmara added.
Why the service matters on the battlefield
Starlink, alongside its military-focused Starshield version, has become an important part of Ukraine’s communications infrastructure during the war. Its satellite-based connection gives Ukrainian forces a more resilient way to exchange information across a battlefield repeatedly affected by strikes and disruption.
The service has particular significance for units using drones, whose operations can depend on rapid links between operators, commanders and other personnel. Stable connections also matter for moving supplies, maintaining contact between dispersed positions and sharing time-sensitive information.
That importance has made any interruption or restriction a major concern for Kyiv. In recent weeks, tensions rose between Ukraine and the United States after Ukrainian forces said their military access to the network had been constrained.
Serhiy Beskrestnov, a military technology adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said last week that SpaceX had applied an overnight speed limit without prior notice. He said the change had affected operations by Ukrainian defence forces.
“Our defence forces did not receive a warning about this limitation and this led to the disruption of several missions,” Beskrestnov wrote on Telegram.
The return to a stable connection may therefore carry immediate operational importance, particularly for personnel who rely on satellite communications when working away from functioning terrestrial networks. Khmara’s statement did not provide further details about what had changed or how long the restored performance would continue.
Broader concerns over intelligence and communications
The dispute over Starlink developed alongside wider questions about support and information-sharing between Washington and Kyiv. US President Donald Trump said this week that he would speak with Musk if Starlink access had not been restored.
On Tuesday, Zelenskyy spoke about concerns surrounding US intelligence sharing while appearing with Nordic leaders. He said he was grateful that intelligence was working, stressing the importance of early warnings for the civilian population.
“I’m speaking about early warning, what is very important for our people, for children, adults, civilians, because we can hear when ballistic is coming,” Zelenskyy said.
For Ukraine, communications and early-warning capabilities have consequences beyond the front line. Alerts can give residents time to seek shelter when ballistic threats are detected, making reliable information flows a matter of civilian safety as well as military planning.
The latest statement on Starlink suggests that, for now, Ukraine’s monitoring systems are seeing a recovery rather than the limitations described earlier in the week. The episode also underlines how dependent modern warfare can become on technologies provided by private companies and external partners.
Fighting continues in Donetsk and inside Russia
News of the restored connection came as authorities in Donetsk region announced fresh civilian casualties from Russian attacks. Vadym Filashkin, the regional governor, said two residents were killed on 23 October, one in Sloviansk and another in Kramatorsk.
“On 23 October, the Russians killed two residents of Donetsk Oblast: in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk,” Filashkin said on Saturday morning.
He said that 18 additional people had been injured across the region during the previous 24 hours. The strikes highlighted the continuing danger facing communities in eastern Ukraine, where Russian attacks remain a daily threat.
Ukraine also said its forces had conducted strikes on Russian targets on Friday and overnight. The targets included the Tolyattikauchuk chemical plant, a Proton-Electrotex building in Oryol, and an aircraft at the Yeysk air base in Krasnodar Krai.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said the attacks on the chemical plant and the Proton-Electrotex site were intended to interfere with Russian missile supply chains and production processes. No further details were provided on the scale of damage.
As fighting and long-range strikes continue on both sides, Kyiv’s announcement about Starlink points to the practical role communications infrastructure plays in sustaining Ukraine’s defence. A stable satellite link cannot determine the course of the war on its own, but it can affect how quickly forces communicate, how drone missions are carried out and how effectively logistics are coordinated under pressure.
