Coachella Kicks Off with Sabrina Carpenter and Surprise Guests

Coachella, the iconic music festival, opened its gates on Friday with a unique twist as pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter took the stage for her debut headlining set. The performance was infused with a classic Hollywood theme, featuring unexpected appearances from actor Susan Sarandon and comedian Will Ferrell. Sarandon stepped into the spotlight during Carpenter’s act, delivering a monologue in a more mature persona. Later, Ferrell joined the stage in a comedic role, impersonating an electrician to add a playful touch.

Sam Elliott, another veteran actor, played a part in the narrative, portraying a character who let Carpenter off with a warning after a fictional traffic stop. This creative collaboration between music and film captivated the audience, blending the festival’s signature energy with cinematic flair. The event, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, has been a cultural staple since 2002.

“Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight,” said the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in an Instagram statement. “Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”

Weather challenges disrupted the festival’s schedule, prompting the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set following Carpenter’s performance. Wind gusts reached up to 25 miles per hour, according to forecasts, forcing the move. Meanwhile, an air quality advisory was issued for the Coachella Valley from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning, citing windblown dust as a potential health concern for vulnerable groups.

“Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections,” warned the National Weather Service.

Indio, the host city, was listed among areas affected by the advisory, though local officials noted that particle levels remained within acceptable ranges after Thursday noon. The festival’s lineup continues to unfold, with Justin Bieber set to headline Saturday and Karol G taking the stage on Sunday. A mix of international acts, including KATSEYE and Disclosure, and UK artists like Wet Leg and FKA Twigs, will perform this weekend. The same schedule will return next week, ensuring a two-week celebration of music and art.
