Melania Trump’s speech propels Epstein crisis back to forefront
A Surprising Shift in Focus
On Thursday, as Melania Trump approached the White House podium, the scene was far from dramatic. President Donald Trump had recently delivered a speech on Iran, yet no one anticipated the gravity of the remarks that would follow. The first lady’s first sentence stunned attendees: “The false connections between me and the scandalous Jeffrey Epstein must cease immediately.” This moment thrust the Epstein scandal—long associated with the president—into the spotlight once more, thanks to his wife’s bold intervention.
Behind the Curtain of Surprise
Officials noted that even those closely following the administration had no prior warning about the topic. Flanked by American flags, Melania’s words cut through the air, prompting immediate reactions. While she has historically kept a low profile, this press conference marked a departure from her usual approach. Her prepared statement clarified she had no ties to Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell, was not introduced to her husband by the financier, and was unaware of his crimes.
Political Timing and Doubt
“I think if Melania Trump had done this at the start of the Epstein crisis – a year ago – and called on Congress to put the victims on record, we’d feel quite different about it,” said investigative journalist Vicky Ward, who has studied the case for decades. The timing of her remarks, she added, seemed to muddy the waters. “There isn’t much of Melania Trump in the Epstein files beyond that one friendly email to Ghislaine Maxwell. I’m baffled by it. No one ever believed she was a victim.”
The suddenness of the announcement raised questions. Had she aimed to preempt new developments, given that the claims she referenced had circulated for years? While her lawyers typically handled such matters, this time she took the stage herself, challenging the narrative.
Survivor Responses and Criticism
Survivors quickly reacted, expressing disbelief and mobilizing for a unified response. Thirteen individuals, alongside the family of Virginia Roberts Giuffre, issued a statement condemning the first lady’s move as a distraction from accountability. “Melania Trump is now shifting the burden onto survivors under politicized conditions that shield those in power,” they asserted, naming the Department of Justice and the Trump administration as key players.
“It sounds like you’re just trying to shift attention from something to something else. So how does this benefit the Trump family, is my question,” said Marina Lacerda, a 14-year-old survivor detailed in the 2019 federal indictment against Epstein. Meanwhile, Lisa Phillips, another survivor, praised Melania’s effort to counter the Department of Justice’s claim that the Epstein case was closed. “Her call for survivors to share their stories is a bold move,” Phillips told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “But I’d challenge her to back it up with action. What can she do to help us now?”
A Political Chess Move?
Even the president was caught off guard. Despite initial reports that he knew of her statement, he claimed ignorance, adding to the mystery. Whether this was a strategic move to redirect focus or a genuine attempt to support survivors remains unclear. As the debate unfolds, the first lady’s words have reignited scrutiny over the Epstein files and the transparency of the legal process.
