Missiles thrown at police as illegal rave shut down
Missiles Thrown at Police During Illegal Rave Shutdown
Dorset Police encountered resistance as they sought to end an unauthorized rave at a scenic spot, with attendees hurling objects at officers. The event, which drew approximately 2,000 people and over 100 vehicles, resulted in 10 arrests. Officers worked through Saturday night into Sunday evening to disperse the gathering, facing a barrage of thrown items during the operation.
“While responding to the incident, our officers were targeted with missiles and dealt with a hostile environment,” explained Assistant Chief Constable Steve Lyne. “Violence within our communities and directed at our personnel is not acceptable. These events are unlawful and cause substantial disruption, requiring decisive action to protect public safety. It’s unacceptable that we face aggression while carrying out our responsibilities.”
As the police dismantled the rave, they confiscated equipment and sealed nearby roads to manage the situation. Arrests were made for offenses like driving under the influence and assaulting emergency responders. Further investigations are ongoing to identify additional violations linked to the event.
Historical Incidents in the Region
Similar gatherings have occurred in Dorset in the past, such as the May 2023 event at Corfe Castle, which continued into the following Monday with officers still clearing attendees. In April 2022, a rave near East Lulworth on military land involved around 1,000 participants. A 2019 rave in the same area left a farmer’s field damaged, covered in shattered glass, human waste, and litter.
The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act grants police the authority to stop vehicles within five miles of a rave and redirect them. It also sets guidelines for gatherings exceeding 20 people enjoying music at night, aiming to curb disorder and ensure compliance with legal standards.
