Morgan McSweeney phone theft conspiracy theories – it’s the job of journalists to seek the truth

Morgan McSweeney Phone Theft and Conspiracy Theories

From the outset, I was skeptical when the story implied that Morgan McSweeney’s phone theft might be linked to requests for messages about Lord Mandelson. It struck me as an outlandish idea at first.

What exactly were the doubters suggesting about this incident? Did Number 10’s chief-of-staff sprint through London at midnight, waving a phone like a flag, hoping a thief would snatch it? Or was the entire affair staged, with the phone tossed into a truck and a fabricated narrative crafted for the police?

Both tales—however far-fetched—still feel improbable, even today. Yet, when officials later questioned whether my skepticism was misplaced, I realized the theory wasn’t as absurd as it initially seemed. Contrary to the prime minister’s claim in an interview, some argued that in October 2025, it wasn’t unreasonable to suspect a request for Mandelson-related messages could have emerged from a stolen phone.

“It did not seem ‘far-fetched’ at all for anyone to think in October 2025 that a formal request for Mandelson-related messages could have come along.”

Though I haven’t confirmed either theory, Sky News isn’t asserting they’re true. The question remains: why pursue the story at all?

Part of the answer lies in the fact that investigating rumors doesn’t mean endorsing them. Journalism’s essence isn’t about declaring truths but uncovering them, even if the path leads to unexpected conclusions or no clear resolution.

Other Stories and the Journalism Process

Consider the case of Louise Haigh’s undisclosed conviction. The initial tip suggested a connection to a stolen phone, but the story we published was more nuanced. While the setup seemed promising, the outcome was a mix of favorable and less favorable angles. Still, the process revealed something valuable to the public.

Similarly, when reports surfaced about Angela Rayner purchasing a coastal flat, my first thought was, “What’s the issue here?” The narrative later expanded to claim she had evaded stamp duty through a legally defensible but politically contentious method. Though her defenders presented a solid case, we chose to report the story—briefly, but deliberately.

Rayner had indeed underpaid taxes, but not for the reason initially framed. It was a legal misstep, more of a mistake than a conspiracy. The story cost her the deputy prime minister role, illustrating how media scrutiny can reshape political landscapes.

Should journalists always wait until certainty before publishing? Not necessarily. Some paths, even if uncertain, are worth exploring. Take Rachel Reeves’ case—initially, it looked like a licensing error could impact her career. But after an explanation, the matter faded without lasting consequences.

The Role of Journalism in Political Narratives

Across these examples, the debate centers less on whether to investigate and more on when to release findings. Critics in Whitehall were particularly irked by how mainstream outlets engaged with the Morgan McSweeney story, seemingly amplifying online conspiracy theories and lending them credibility.

However, for those arguing we acted too quickly, I offer this: the “optics” of a story often matter in politics. Yet, I believe we should prioritize what “is” bad over what merely “looks” bad. The core of journalism is to dig deeper, even if the truth isn’t immediately clear.

Whether the stolen phone saga was a setup or an accident, the pursuit of answers is essential. After all, it’s the journalist’s duty to seek the truth, no matter how tangled the trail becomes.
