In a Thursday message on his Truth Social account, Trump praised Polish President Karol Nawrocki and indicated that discussions had made significant headway. He said the prospective base could be publicly identified soon if the plan comes together.

“Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend, Karol Nawrocki, President of Poland, major progress is being made toward establishing a U.S. Army base in Poland.”

Trump described the project as potentially consequential for the long-standing partnership between the United States and Poland. His comments did not identify a proposed site or set out a timetable for an agreement, construction, or a permanent troop deployment.

“If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for our Great U.S./Polish Alliance.”

Existing US presence in Poland

The United States already maintains a substantial military footprint in Poland, though much of it is based on rotational forces rather than a newly established permanent Army base. Around 10,000 US personnel are currently deployed in the country on a rotational basis. The American military also operates across 11 installation sites, while US Army Garrison Poland is headquartered in Poznań.

That existing network gives the US military an established presence in a country that has become an important part of NATO’s eastern flank. A permanent base, if approved, would represent a different type of commitment: a formal and enduring installation rather than forces rotating through the country for set periods.

For Poland, the prospect carries particular strategic weight because the country has consistently sought a closer and more visible American military role. A permanent base could deepen military coordination, support training and logistical activity, and reinforce the political importance of the US-Polish security partnership.

A shift after earlier uncertainty

Trump’s statement follows a period of uncertainty over the scale of the US military commitment in Europe. Earlier this year, his administration threatened to remove troops from Poland as part of a broader effort to reduce the American military presence across the continent.

That approach came after repeated criticism from Trump of European NATO members’ defence spending. The debate has focused on whether allies are contributing enough to their own defence and sharing the costs of collective security more evenly.

The administration later changed course on Poland. Trump announced that an additional 5,000 troops would be sent there, linking the decision to Nawrocki’s 2025 election victory. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has called Poland a “model ally,” reflecting the administration’s favourable view of Warsaw’s role within NATO.

The contrast between an earlier possibility of troop reductions and the subsequent plan to send more personnel illustrates Poland’s standing in Washington’s current European security policy. It also suggests that the possible permanent base is being considered alongside, rather than instead of, the US military structures already operating in the country.

Military support and political backing

The discussion over a base comes in the same month that the US State Department announced $4 billion in military assistance for Poland. That support underscores the scale of defence cooperation between the two countries and the importance both governments place on maintaining Polish military readiness.

Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz welcomed Trump’s remarks and thanked him for efforts aimed at creating a lasting American base. In a post on X, he tied the announcement to the working relationship between the two presidents and described the development as an affirmation of the countries’ strategic ties.

“Good cooperation between presidents also yields positive results. This is a significant affirmation of our strategic partnership.”

Any permanent base would require further decisions beyond a political announcement, including agreement on the location, infrastructure, personnel arrangements and the long-term responsibilities of both governments. Trump’s statement made clear that a final outcome has not yet been confirmed, using the phrase “if this happens” when referring to a future announcement.

Still, the public indication of “major progress” marks a notable signal from the White House. Poland already hosts rotational US forces and several American military sites; a permanent Army base would build on that foundation and could become one of the clearest symbols of the expanding defence relationship between Washington and Warsaw.
