“It’s like the Middle Age Temu thing. And the carvers, the artists, they really love this theme, because there are so many good pictures and stories in it,” said Christian Warrer, organizer of the Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival.

Unlike traditional sandcastles, the festival’s sculptures rely on a specialized blend of sand and clay to withstand the elements. This mixture allows the art to harden like stone, ensuring it endures for weeks despite weather changes. “It’s not beach sand, but normal sand from a sand pit with a bit of clay,” Warrer clarified. For example, Dutch artist Joris Kivits’ sculpture “The Kings’ Game” reimagines medieval diplomacy through the lens of chess. “I found something about chess and that was kind of lovely,” Kivits said, noting how the game symbolized intercultural exchanges among rulers.
