Ultra-Marathon Champion Dies While Running Cape Wrath Trail

A 35-year-old ultramarathon athlete from Dumfries, Scotland, has tragically passed away during a run in the Highlands. David Parrish was attempting to set a new record for the fastest completion of the Cape Wrath trail, a 234-mile (376km) route stretching from Fort William to Cape Wrath. The challenging path traverses rugged regions such as Lochaber, Knoydart, Applecross, and Torridon, which are known for their extreme conditions. Parrish was discovered in the isolated Kintail area of the northwest Highlands on Saturday at approximately 10:25 PM.

Police Scotland confirmed there were no signs of foul play, stating that his family had been informed of the circumstances. Despite his relatively short competitive career, Parrish had previously triumphed in the Cape Wrath Trail in 2023. His recent challenge was also a fundraising effort for Scottish Mountain Rescue, in tribute to his late friend, Luke Ireland, a 20-year-old Royal Marine who died in the Glen Clova mountains of Angus in November 2014.

Parrish shared on his fundraising page: “Mountain rescue volunteers worked relentlessly to find Luke, always ready to assist with emergencies across Scotland’s rugged landscapes and isolated regions.”

His campaign has raised significant funds, with many participants expressing admiration for his commitment. A member of Dumfries Running Club, Parrish had been club champion in 2022. He began running in his late teens, eventually competing in local 5km and 10km races by his early 20s. After joining the Royal Marines, he described running as a way to unwind from the pressures of military duty. Following his service, he embraced Parkruns and completed the Cape Wrath Trail in 2021.

The 2023 Cape Wrath event included a photograph of Parrish captured by No Limits Photography. The company’s founders, Harriet D’Alessio and Christiaan Le Roux, praised him on Tuesday: “David was a vibrant individual and an extraordinary ultramarathon athlete—his absence will leave a significant void in both the world and the sport.” His legacy continues to inspire those who followed his journey, highlighting his passion for endurance and community spirit.
