Uganda succession dispute deepens after goalkeeper rejects Tooro throne

“Once the matter of the new king of the Batoro is settled, we will be happy to work with him, just as we did with His Highness Oyo,” he said in a statement read at the funeral. “I call on the Batoro to use peaceful and lawful means to resolve this issue and to favour unity over division.”
The Batoro are the people of Tooro. Uganda is a republic, but its four officially recognised traditional kingdoms continue to hold an important cultural and symbolic role. Their monarchs have no formal political authority, yet they retain substantial public loyalty and influence.
Uganda’s kingdoms were abolished after independence by a republican president seeking to consolidate the country, before being restored in 1993. Their restoration reaffirmed their cultural status while political authority remained with the republic’s elected institutions.
The Babiito royal committee, responsible for lineage, family matters and succession under Tooro tradition, defended its actions. Its chair, Omusuuga Charles Karumasi, said the committee had followed established cultural procedures.
“We have done everything in observance of the culture and traditions of Tooro. We must all preserve peace and serenity,” Karumasi said.
Royal family questions succession process
King Oyo’s mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, said the contest over the throne had stopped the family from mourning properly. She also alleged that she and other relatives had been subjected to what amounted to house arrest.
“I also appeal to those fighting over the throne: please, there will be time for all of that. Let us grieve and bury my son King Oyo,” she said.
Princess Ruth Komuntale, the late king’s sister, accused what she described as “evil vultures” of acting against her and the Queen Mother. She produced a will said to have been written by King Oyo in 2022, naming “a biological son” as heir without identifying the child.
The claimed existence of a son surprised many figures in the Tooro elite. The child was not included in the succession vote, and many people had not previously known that the late monarch had a son. That uncertainty now sits at the heart of objections to Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma’s nomination.
