Cuba Confirms Recent Talks With US Amid Severe Energy Crisis

Cuba has engaged in recent discussions with Washington to address mutual issues, according to President Miguel Díaz-Canel. This marks the first public acknowledgment by Havana of diplomatic contact between the two nations in months. The talks, which took place in the wake of a deepening energy shortfall, were described as efforts to “resolve bilateral differences through dialogue.”

Energy Shortages Disrupt Daily Life

The nation is confronting a critical energy crisis, with frequent power outages and limited fuel availability impacting households and infrastructure. Díaz-Canel pointed to the U.S. “energy blockade” as the primary cause, noting that oil shipments have been absent for three months. “The impact is tremendous,” he stated, citing disruptions in transport, healthcare, and communication systems, including delayed medical procedures affecting thousands.

Prisoner Releases Signal Diplomatic Shift

Hours before the energy-related announcement, Cuba revealed plans to release 51 detainees. The foreign ministry framed the action as an expression of goodwill, linking it to improved ties with the Vatican. While details about the prisoners’ identities were not disclosed, officials emphasized that all had completed substantial portions of their sentences and demonstrated exemplary behavior. Prisoners Defenders estimates over 1,200 political prisoners remain incarcerated in Cuba as of early 2026.

“The impact is tremendous,” he said, detailing problems in transport, communications and health care, with thousands of surgeries postponed.
