British doubles legend Murray retires from tennis

Retirement Announced for British Tennis Doubles Icon Jamie Murray

Jamie Murray, the first British doubles player to reach the world number one ranking, has officially announced his retirement from professional tennis. The 40-year-old, who last competed at the US Open in August, shared his decision on Instagram, expressing excitement about transitioning to life beyond the court. “My tennis journey concludes after 36 years,” he wrote. “I feel incredibly lucky for the unforgettable experiences this sport has offered me.”

“Thanks Mum, Dad, Andy, Ale, Alan, Louis and Thomas for all your incredible support, efforts and sacrifices throughout my career that allowed me to achieve everything I could in the game. For everybody else that’s helped and supported me – I appreciate all of you!”

Murray’s legacy in doubles is marked by 34 titles, with two of them secured alongside his younger brother Andy. The pair’s collaboration was pivotal in securing Great Britain’s first Davis Cup victory in 79 years during 2015. Despite often finding their mutual presence in major finals overwhelming, Andy briefly joined Jamie in the coaching box at the 2016 Australian Open to capture photos of his brother’s first Grand Slam men’s doubles title. At the time, it was 01:00, and Andy was set to face Novak Djokovic in the singles final just 18 hours later.

“Shouldn’t you be in bed?” Jamie asked as he accepted the trophy with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares. The duo later added the US Open title in the summer, culminating their year as the world’s top doubles team—a feat mirrored by Andy in his singles career.

In mixed doubles, Murray earned five titles, including Wimbledon triumphs with Jelena Jankovic in 2007 and Martina Hingis a decade later. His career, spanning decades, has left a lasting mark on the sport. More to follow. Live scores, results and order of play Get tennis news sent straight to your phone
