Mother speaks out after son fell to his death in high-rise railing incident
Mother Condemns Tragic High-Rise Railing Collapse That Killed Son
Joshua Robbins, a 23-year-old man, lost his life after a communal railing at his father’s flat in London gave way, causing him to fall five stories. His mother, Fiona Garrett, emphasized that the incident “could’ve happened to anybody,” urging greater awareness of the dangers posed by such structures.
Incident Details
The accident occurred at Holland and Thurston Dwellings on Newton Street in Holborn. Police were alerted just before 8:30 pm on January 29, following reports of a fall. Despite prompt assistance from emergency services, Joshua was confirmed dead at the scene.
Mother’s Statement
“Joshua leaned on the railings by the lift to check if the pizza had arrived. He was giving instructions, and the railing suddenly gave way, sending Josh plummeting five floors to his death.”
Ms. Garrett, who was not present during the incident, described the event as a “catastrophic accident that should never have occurred, [it was] entirely preventable.” She added that her husband was “deeply traumatised” and grappling with “survivor’s guilt,” as he rushed down the stairs to rescue his son after hearing screams.
“The paramedics arrived swiftly, but they said his injuries weren’t ‘compatible with life.’ There was nothing they could do,” she explained. “This tragedy must mean something—Joshua can’t just vanish without cause.”
Campaign for Safety Standards
Joshua’s family has launched “No More Falls,” a campaign demanding mandatory safety regulations for high-rise buildings with similar railings or balcony setups. Ms. Garrett stressed the need for concrete action, stating, “I want people to understand this isn’t going away. I don’t want to hear ‘lessons learned’ or be handed empty promises. Our family deserves real change.”
Housing Association Response
Pippa Fleetwood-Read, CEO of Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), shared the following statement: “Joshua’s death has deeply affected everyone who knew him. We’re doing everything possible to support residents, including providing counselling, regular on-site visits, and weekly updates. While the police investigation continues, we remain committed to addressing concerns.” She noted the inquiry is ongoing and will involve expert witnesses and interviews.
Police Investigation Update
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the probe is in its early stages, with investigators consulting a forensic structural engineer and speaking to witnesses. “These enquiries may take time due to the complexity of the case,” they stated. A coroner’s report will follow the police findings, and the family is being kept informed throughout the process.
Ms. Garrett also mentioned receiving a reply from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, describing it as “personal and genuine,” though she expressed hope for more substantial action. “I need someone to truly grasp the gravity of this,” she said, highlighting the importance of systemic improvements to prevent future tragedies.
