Suspect Identified in Texas Bar Shooting That Left 2 Dead, 14 Injured

A 53-year-old man has been named as the individual responsible for a deadly shooting at an Austin bar, resulting in two fatalities and 14 injuries. The incident occurred shortly before dawn on Sunday, as reported by Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis during a press briefing. Officers arrived at Buford’s, a well-known beer garden in the city’s downtown area, around 1:58 a.m. to address the gunfire.

Shooting Details and Suspect Actions

According to Davis, the suspect had circled the bar’s block multiple times in an SUV prior to the attack. At one point, he activated his vehicle’s flashers, rolled down a window, and began firing from the car, striking patrons on the patio and near the entrance. After parking, he transitioned to a rifle, targeting individuals walking in the vicinity. Officers eventually apprehended him on West Sixth Street, where he was fatally shot.

“At one point, he put his flashers on, pulled down his window and began using a pistol, shooting out of his car windows, striking patrons of the bar that were on the patio, and out in front of the bar,” Davis explained.

Suspect Background and Legal Status

The suspect, identified as Ndiaga Diagne, is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal. A Homeland Security official noted he initially entered the country on a B-2 tourist visa in 2000 and later attained lawful permanent resident status through marriage in 2006. He completed naturalization in 2013. Diagne had a prior arrest in 2022 for a vehicle collision.

Investigation Focus and Preliminary Findings

Authorities are currently assessing whether the shooting was an act of terrorism or linked to mental health issues. Four sources briefed on the case indicated Diagne appeared to act alone without apparent state connections. An FBI special agent from San Antonio, Alex Doran, stated the agency is collaborating with local law enforcement, though early indicators suggest a possible terrorist connection.

“There were indicators that on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” Doran said. “Again, it’s still too early to make a determination on that.”

Victims and Emergency Response

Robert Luckritz, head of the county’s emergency medical services, reported that three individuals were killed during the attack, including the suspect. A total of 14 others were hospitalized, with three in critical condition. Paramedics were already stationed in the entertainment district when the shooting began, responding within 57 seconds of the initial call.

Leadership Responses and Security Measures

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid reaction of public safety personnel, calling it a lifesaving effort. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed solidarity with victims, stating the state would not be defined by the violence. He also highlighted enhanced security measures, including increased patrols at energy facilities and border areas, and expanded cybersecurity capabilities.

“This act of violence will not define us, nor will it shake the resolve of Texans,” Abbott said. “Though any potential terror ties have yet to be confirmed, I am prepared to protect our citizens from threats, especially those tied to Middle East conflicts.”
