Declan Holmes, the son of veteran broadcaster Eamonn Holmes, shared that his father is “recovering steadily” following a recent stroke. The family is focusing on maintaining a stable environment for the 66-year-old GB News presenter, as Declan noted, “We’re moving forward carefully, ensuring everything remains consistent.”
“We’d really value a bit of privacy as we navigate it, and what lies ahead, but thank you again for the support—it means so much to dad and the rest of the family,” Declan added in a message posted on Instagram.
GB News confirmed Holmes’s hospitalization after the incident, which occurred last week. The channel stated that he is “responding positively to treatment” and has been under care since the stroke. Holmes, who joined GB News in 2022 to host its breakfast show, had previously worked on Sky News and ITV.
Longstanding Career and Personal Life
With a broadcasting career spanning several decades, Holmes transitioned to GB News in 2022, taking on the role of breakfast programme host. Before that, he had led segments on Sky News and ITV. His work on ITV’s *This Morning* included collaborations with Ruth Langsford, whom he married in 2010. The couple announced their separation in 2024, with a spokesperson confirming “their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”

Declan highlighted that the stroke came as a “major surprise” to the family, noting Holmes’s history of health issues. These included spinal surgery, a double hip replacement, and difficulties with mobility, which required the use of a scooter.
Angelos Frangopoulos, CEO of GB News, described Holmes as a “treasured colleague” and reassured that the team is “supporting him every step of the way.” The stroke, as defined by NHS guidelines, occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted, potentially leading to symptoms like facial drooping, arm weakness, and speech impairments.
While details about Holmes’s current condition remain limited, his family has expressed hope for a steady recovery. The post accompanying Declan’s message featured an image of him with his arm around his father’s shoulder, symbolizing the close bond between them.
