New Nintendo Switch 2 console model to be released only in Europe claims report

A recent report suggests Nintendo may introduce a revised Switch 2 model in Europe as a result of EU regulations aimed at enabling right to repair laws. The legislation, which gained traction in July 2023, is part of a broader initiative to reduce electronic waste by requiring replaceable batteries in all consumer electronics within the bloc by 2027.

Subtle changes for a more sustainable design

The Switch 2 has been available for nearly a year, with some gamers anticipating a Lite variant. However, Nintendo is reportedly preparing a new iteration before that. According to Japanese media outlet Nikkei, the update involves modifying the console’s design to allow battery replacement—a move necessitated by the EU’s push for easier repairability.

Though the revision is said to be focused on Europe, analysts speculate Nintendo might apply similar changes to Japan and US models if public awareness grows. The UK, though not part of the EU, will likely receive the new version due to shared access to the same consoles and games as the rest of Europe.

Japan-exclusive model and market differences

Interestingly, a Japan-exclusive Switch 2 model is already available at a lower price, around £235, designed to offset the yen’s recent depreciation. This could mean each of the three major markets—Europe, Japan, and the US—will eventually have distinct versions of the console.

Despite being the fastest-selling console to date, the Switch 2 has seen a decline in sales over recent months, though it continues to outperform its predecessor. If the upcoming revision is just a battery adjustment, Nintendo may not even market it as a new model. In 2019, they applied a comparable update to the original Switch, enhancing battery life and making minor tweaks.

Nintendo has not officially confirmed any revisions, so the information should be taken with caution. Nevertheless, the EU legislation is genuine and stands as a solid foundation for these changes.
