Watch: Principal Subdues Active Shooter at Oklahoma School
A surveillance video captures the instant a school principal confronts an armed intruder at an Oklahoma high school. On 7 April, the suspect, identified as Victor Hawkins, entered Pauls Valley High School and opened fire. Principal Kirk Moore immediately pursued the attacker, engaging in a physical struggle before another employee intervened to disarm him. Though Moore sustained a leg injury during the confrontation, he was discharged from the hospital. Hawkins, now in custody, faces multiple charges, including unlawful weapon possession and attempted assault.
Artemis II Mission Sets New Space Record
The crew of the Artemis II mission, aboard the Orion spacecraft, recently surpassed the distance record previously held by the Apollo 13 team in 1970. Their nine-day journey pushed the spacecraft farther from Earth than any human mission before. Astronaut Christina Koch, speaking after reestablishing communication, shared:
“It is so great to hear from Earth again.”
The mission marks a critical step for NASA’s goal of returning humans to the Moon by 2028.
Other Notable Events
Meanwhile, a Tampa homeowner alerted authorities after discovering a nine-foot alligator in his pool area. Specialists swiftly removed the reptile from the scene. Separately, the annual Great Marshmallow Drop event saw over 15,000 fluffy treats dropped from a helicopter, drawing crowds of children eager to collect them. The prime minister of Canada, during his inaugural bilateral visit, joined the Ottawa Charge team on the ice with the president of Finland. Additionally, passengers on a commercial flight were treated to a rare view of the Moon mission launch, witnessed by BBC Science Editor Rebecca Morelle from just three miles away.
Behind the Mission
Rebecca Morelle conducted interviews with Artemis II astronauts ahead of their planned splashdown on Saturday. Among the crew, Jeremy Hansen made history as Canada’s first astronaut to venture into deep space. The mission included various tests, such as simulating spacecraft maneuvering. Commander Reid Wiseman, whose wife passed away from cancer in 2020 at age 46, continues to lead the crew through their third day of orbiting the Moon’s far side. While no landing is planned for this trip, NASA remains on track to achieve a lunar touchdown by 2028.
