Dogs found crammed in living room ‘doing really well’, says RSPCA

Dogs Found Overcrowded ‘Thriving in Recovery’, Reports RSPCA

Following the rescue of approximately 250 canines from a UK property with severe overcrowding, the RSPCA has shared updates indicating the animals are showing signs of improvement. The charity previously noted the rapid escalation of the situation due to challenging family circumstances, which led to the poodle crossbreeds being discovered in January at an unspecified location.

Lee Hopgood, the RSPCA’s operational superintendent for the North of England, appeared on BBC Breakfast to confirm that the dogs are in good health. “Surprisingly, the animals are fine and doing really, really well,” he stated. However, he acknowledged that many were found in poor condition, with coats described as “matted and crusted,” requiring immediate treatment.

“Many of the dogs have now been successfully rehomed and are enjoying life in their forever homes,” said a spokesperson for Dogs Trust, adding that several remain in their care, including those who gave birth while under the charity’s supervision.

One notable rescue, Boone—a poodle-cross—was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner. Murphy featured Boone on BBC Breakfast, highlighting the positive outcome of the rescue efforts. The RSPCA also linked the incident to broader factors such as mental health struggles, the cost of living crisis, or substandard breeding practices.

In response to social media claims that a viral image was AI-generated, the charity clarified that the photograph, depicting dozens of dogs confined in a living room, was authentic. The image underscores the “staggering reality” of multi-dog incidents, which have surged by 70% in England and Wales since 2021. The RSPCA chose not to pursue prosecution, citing the owners’ extremely vulnerable situation.

The rescued dogs, all poodle-cross breeds, or “doodles,” have gained popularity in recent years. According to a 2025 Dogs Trust survey, they rank among the top three crossbreeds in terms of ownership. In November, the RSPCA also rescued 80 dogs, primarily chihuahuas, pomeranians, and cross-breeds, from a house in Bedfordshire.
