BBC visits aftermath of Israeli strike on Lebanon that killed family as IDF targets Hezbollah

BBC documents devastation in Lebanon after Israeli strike kills family

Amid escalating clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, the BBC witnessed the aftermath of a bombing in Younine, a northeastern town in Lebanon, where eight individuals—including three children—were killed. The attack, which struck a home and shop during a Ramadan fast-breaking gathering, left the yellow flag of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, draped over the rubble. Locals reported finding children’s toys and sweets mixed with debris at the scene.

Israeli military claims targeting Hezbollah infrastructure

The Israeli Defense Forces stated they had “targeted Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure while operatives were present.” However, nearby residents and relatives expressed disbelief, stating they had no prior knowledge of the strike. One neighbor described the sudden explosion, which collapsed the building and scattered body parts across the road.

“My kids and I were all terrified. The whole area was… I have no words to explain what I saw,” said a local shepherd who had been at the shop 30 minutes before the blast. He offered yogurt to the family and later retrieved body parts for first responders.

“It all happened so suddenly and all I know is that they are decent and religious but I have no idea why they would be targeted,” remarked a Syrian woman living in a nearby tent. She relied on the family for credit and was still in shock after the attack.

Impact on civilians and community

Items from the shop, such as yogurt cartons and soda bottles, were buried in the rubble alongside personal belongings like children’s clothes. A framed photo of Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s first supreme leader, was partially crushed by debris. School teacher Hassan al-Tahan identified the property as his brother’s, who hosted the Iftar meal for relatives at the time of the strike.

“It was three [related] families having an iftar together… we always have gatherings together, we always sit at each other’s houses,” al-Tahan said. “My house is nearby and when I heard the sounds, I came screaming and I saw something that I had never seen before.”

The Lebanese health ministry confirmed the eight victims were civilians. Local officials noted that while Hezbollah has strong support in the area, the family was described as non-combatants. “We don’t have any military items in the house but Israel attacked us because we are Shia,” al-Tahan added. “The Israelis claim they struck a Hezbollah facility. The Hezbollah facility turned out to be this civilian home.”

Broader context of the conflict

The strike is among hundreds conducted since the war with Hezbollah resumed nearly two weeks ago. Most have targeted southern Lebanon, the eastern Bekaa Valley, and Beirut’s southern suburbs, Dahieh—areas central to Hezbollah’s operations. Some attacks also reached Beirut’s city center. Over 800 people have been killed in the Israeli campaign, according to Lebanese health data, including 12 healthcare workers reportedly killed in a medical center strike on Friday night.
