Disruption hits power link between Finland and Sweden
A critical power cable connecting Finland and Sweden experienced a temporary interruption before being repaired. The incident occurred early Tuesday, disrupting the Fenno-Skan 2 line, which carries 800 megawatts of electricity across the Baltic Sea. Finland’s grid operator, Fingrid, confirmed the outage stemmed from a substation malfunction, though the undersea cable itself remained intact.
A spokesperson for Fingrid stated the issue was traced to a technical failure at a local station. The affected equipment was examined, and service was restored by midday, with full operations resuming shortly afterward.
Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the Baltic region has faced heightened security concerns. Multiple power and telecom cables have been severed, prompting investigations into possible sabotage. Officials also cited risks from Moscow’s “shadow fleet”—a network of unregistered oil tankers used to bypass Western sanctions.
Last month, Finnish authorities detained two individuals on a cargo ship linked to damage on a separate undersea cable between Helsinki and Estonia’s capital. This incident underscores growing vigilance in the area. The situation remains under review as updates continue.
