Celebrating Greece and its ancient gods: Annual polytheism festival takes place on Mount Olympus
A Living Tradition: Ancient Greek Polytheism Comes Alive on Mount Olympus
A Summer Gathering Rooted in Mythology
Celebrating Greece and its ancient gods - For over thirty years, the majestic slopes of Mount Olympus have served as a spiritual home for devotees of ancient Greek beliefs. Each summer, hundreds of participants—both local Greeks and international visitors—converge upon the region to engage in ceremonies that echo practices from antiquity. The towns of Litochoro and the surrounding Prometheus Grove have become essential destinations for those seeking to deepen their understanding of Dodekatheism, the spiritual path dedicated to venerating the twelve Olympian deities. This tradition, frequently referred to as Greek polytheism, offers a living connection to the past through ritual and community.
The festival spans four days of continuous celebration, carefully orchestrated by Prometheus, the Fire Bringer. This cultural organization draws its identity from the legendary Titan who, according to classical mythology, defied Zeus, the supreme ruler of the gods, to deliver sacred fire to humanity. Through this act of rebellion and generosity, the Titan became a symbol of enlightenment and human potential. Today, his name lives on through an association that keeps these ancient values vibrant and accessible to modern seekers.
Rituals, Names, and Nature Worship
During the festival, participants immerse themselves in a variety of traditional activities. Processions wind through the landscape, torch relays illuminate the evening sky, and symbolic ceremonies unfold near the historic archaeological site of Dion. Many attendees adopt names drawn from ancient Greek sources, using them exclusively throughout the duration of the gathering. This practice of renaming reflects a deeper transformation, a shedding of modern identity in favor of something more timeless.
Most members of the Prometheus association undergo a formal naming ceremony and thereafter address one another using their newly acquired ancient names. This tradition creates a sense of continuity with the past, allowing participants to step into a role that transcends their everyday lives. The emphasis on nature is equally prominent, as the mountains, rivers, and forests serve as both setting and sacred space.
"It is a celebration with a distinctly Greek-centred character. We honour our gods, we honour nature, as you can see around us, because for the ancient Greeks nature itself was their temple."
Voices from the Festival
Triantafyllos Athanassoulas shared his personal experience during a torchlight procession, illustrating how the festival transforms individual identity. "My official name is Triantafyllos, but here I've taken the name Hermodoros ('gift of the god Hermes')," he explained. His choice reflects the personal significance that participants find in connecting with specific deities through their chosen names.
The festival also features a special gathering along the banks of the Enipeas river, where ceremonies honor the natural world as well as the Nymphs and Nereids of Greek mythology. These water spirits hold a prominent place in the pantheon, representing the sacred connection between humanity and the elements.
"Polytheism is not a religion. We are talking about the Greek worldview, a cosmological way of understanding how we perceive the divine around us. The divine element is present everywhere," says Georgia Altintasiotou, president of Prometheus, the Fire Bringer.
Conclusion: A Living Worldview
The festival concludes with theatrical performances, traditional dances, and communal festivities, all set against the stunning natural backdrop of Mount Olympus's forests. Rather than viewing polytheism merely as a religious system, participants embrace it as a comprehensive worldview—a cosmological framework for understanding the divine presence in all aspects of existence. Through ritual, nature, and community, this ancient tradition continues to thrive in the modern world, offering a bridge between past and present for thousands of devoted followers.
